Many factors will contribute to your success as a Network Marketing home business owner. Company choice, your determination to succeed, and your ability to build solid, meaningful relationships with your business partners will all play a role.
However, the first and foremost factor that will determine your success is deciding with which company you choose to align yourself. Be sure to give your company choice the thought and consideration it deserves. Network Marketing has exploded in the past decade, and with it, a whole slew of companies have arrived on the scene selling everything from household products, to health supplements, to legal services. There is no end to the kinds of products or services you can market, but you should be very selective about which company you choose to work. Conduct your "due diligence" and choose a company with a proven track record of success in all aspects of the Network Marketing industry. The Direct Selling Association website is a great place to start.
First you should consider the reputation of the company. Some marketers choose to go with a well established company. Others may choose to go with a relatively new company. In either case, determine whether the company stands behind their products and distributors. Does the company have a duplicateable business system? Look for a company, a team, and a sponsor that has a system in place that you can use from day one in building your Network Marketing business.
Also consider the compensation plan. Here is where you can be easily misled. Don't get sucked in by a slick sales presentation from another marketer and hear only the part about the large dollar figures to be earned in a short amount of time. Making a large income in a short period of time is an unrealistic expectation. You can however expect to make a significant income in 1-3 years. Make sure you understand how the company's compensation plan works. Find out whether you are required to buy a certain "quota" of products before you start making commissions, or whether commissions accrue right away.
I spent many months researching Network Marketing home businesses to make sure I ended up choosing the best of the best. In the process, I determined that several key criteria should be used when sifting through all of the options, to make sure you end up choosing the best company for you. Here they are:
- Product/Service Variety - Choose a company that has many products and/or services to offer you and your potential customers. Many companies you will consider only have a very narrow focused product and service offering, i.e. health and wellness, cosmetics, communications, legal services, books, etc. The obvious problem with this is that your customers preferences may change over time, thereby rendering your existing offerings obsolete. The best option is to find a company that is a product and service brokerage that offers a large portfolio of items and can bring new products and services to your market very easily as the trends change.
- Team Structure - Stay away from businesses that are structured in the old style Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) way. Suffice it to say that the MLM structure is an old, outdated, inefficient team structure that makes it very difficult to build a large, cohesive team of fellow business owners. Choose a business that will provide you with the ability to generate significant residual income by only building two teams of fellow business owners. The businesses that will provide you with the best chances of great success are those that only require you to enroll two business partners into the business to qualify for commission checks and future long term residual income. Statistics have shown that the average network marketing business owner is able to enroll 2.8 people into their business.
- Pay Cycle - Choose a company that pays weekly. Many Network Marketing companies will only pay you monthly, assuming you are at the level that justifies issuing you a check. A small number of companies issue checks to their business owners on a weekly basis. Weekly pay cycles will provide you with greater cash flow flexibility.
- Business Volume Accumulation Period - Be very careful here! When you consume or distribute a product or service from the company you choose, you will be given points that are assigned to the specific item(s). Choose a company that will accumulate your business volume points for an entire year. Many Network Marketing companies only allow your business volume point values to accumulate for one month at which point you are reset back to zero and have to start all over the next month. For example, if a company requires you to hit 500 points to get a commision check, and you only got to 400 that month - too bad - no check. You will then have to start accumulating all over again from zero in hopes of breaking that 500 level! By choosing a company that will let your points carry over into the next month, it is not a matter of if you will get paid, just when you will get paid! I only know of a small number of companies that provide the annual accumulation of your business volume points.
- Search To Infinity - Choose a company that adds up your business volume down the entire length of your teams when they perform their commission payout calculations. This is know as "searching to infinity". Many MLM type companies only search down to a certain point depending upon your level in the business. What then is your incentive to continue to build your team and help your team members build their team if your income is essentially capped anyway? There is none! Again, only a small number of newer well established companies base their commission calculations on the volume generated in your entire organization.
- Downloadable Business Volume - This is a must have, incredible feature of some companies compensation plans. This means that business owners can place the business vloume generated from a particular transaction down onto their lowest personally sponsored business partner. The person that the volume was placed onto gets credited with the volume, but so does everybody else above them as the business volume typically flows back up to the original sponsor. Everybody benefits. This type of structure creates a tremendous amount of teamwork and cohesiveness and possibly most importantly, longevity. People get paid faster and more often with a structure that allows downloadable business volume.
Choosing a home business to get started with is a big deal that should not be taken lightly. If you follow the criteria I have outlined above, you can select the best company for you with complete confidence that it has all of the best features available.

As mentioned earlier, the true power of network marketing is leverage - expanding your distribution network by attracting other like minded business professionals. Think about this for a moment, let's imagine that you have to carry 100 bricks from one side of the road to the other side; what would make more sense: Carrying all 100 bricks yourself or recruiting 20 other people to carry 5 brisk each? I have also heard it said that it is better to have 1% of the efforts of a 100 people than 100% of my own effort.
